Azienda Agricola Porta del Vento
Marco Sferlazzo
Camporeal

On the beautiful island of Sicily, near the western coast, there's a sandy hill that looks out over the mountaintops and down on the beaches of Palermo. It's high enough and costal enough for a constant wine to blow cool air through the old vines, a perfect microclimate for southern grapes. So, Marco Sferlazzo called his winery Porta del Vento, or the door to the wind.

It's a beautiful place, but also a very important one for two highly endangered and highly delicious varieties: Perricone and Catarratto. Almost 20 years ago, Marco was working in the small village of Camporeale as a pharmacist. He was a wine lover and dreamed of a life in the vineyards. He learned about this sandy hill where these indigenous varieties he loved were growing older. When a commercial winery threatened to buy the land and pull up the vines to plant a more generic, international variety, he took his chance, got a mortgage and started his winery.

At the time, there were less than 20 ha of Perricone left in existence, and today Marco's are some of the oldest. Him and his son, Marco Jr., have converted all the vineyards to organic and biodynamic, and have built an incredible, natural winery where most of their wines are made without additions. In the service of preservation and celebration, the winery has focused on the versatility of these varieties, making everything from quaffable frizzante (Voria), to Georgian-styled amphora macerations, to extracted reds with years in Slavonian oak. Also Grappa!

There are no bad wines in the lot and we feel so lucky to represent this place in the United States. Happily, thanks in large part to the Marcos, both Perricone and Catarratto have made a huge comeback in the region and in Sicily more broadly.
